Let’s make sure we’re a good match!

Theresa Cao, PsyD

Since the therapy process is all about you, therapy can feel extremely vulnerable and the therapeutic relationship can feel one-sided. Therefore, I think it is fair to share a little bit about myself so you can get to know who will be walking alongside you.

I am a licensed Clinical Psychologist from Southern California. My career has been dedicated to helping individuals and their loved ones create meaning in their lives and understand who they are in relation to the world. I can say with absolute certainty that this is my true vocational path that reflects who I am.

I earned my Bachelor's degree in Psychology at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona and then pursued my doctoral education and training at Azusa Pacific University. I have over 12 years of clinical experience treating mental health issues and conducting psychological assessments. I have worked in a variety of clinical settings and with individuals across the lifespan, with most of my experience in outpatient behavioral health working with young adults, women, and older teens. I am most passionate about helping these individuals navigate important life goals such as establishing healthy relationships, increasing empowerment and self-care, exploring a sense of identity, navigating transitions/change, and balancing different life roles.

More specifically, I have extensive training and expertise with Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, which is a therapeutic approach focused on increasing self-regulating skills to be more effective with tolerating distress, regulating emotions, and establishing/maintaining healthy relationships. Further, I have worked extensively with individuals (both teens and adults) who have been diagnosed with ADHD. My work with these clients is geared towards helping to improve executive functioning skills in order to live a more functioning day to day life and feel as competent as possible.

My identity as a person is also what makes me a psychologist at my core. As a Vietnamese American, born and raised in Southern California by two immigrant parents, I understand the cultural and generational factors that impact many Asian American individuals, especially those who identify as first generation Americans who want to "break the cycle" of generational and cultural patterns that contribute to problematic ways of navigating life and relationships. As a mother and a wife, I understand the complex challenges and overwhelming feelings that accompany balancing different roles, and the demanding transitions and changes that don't allow for consideration of yourself. And as a working professional, I enjoy helping other professionals establish a sense of fulfillment and purpose, as well as a work-life balance while working towards their career goals.

I currently reside in Southern California with my husband and my toddler. I enjoy being outdoors, traveling, spending time with my little one, catching up with family and friends, and watching movies/shows.
